Jon Smith Period 8 English 12 February 12, 1997
It all started in the interesting metropolis of New York. The smog ridden
streets were filled with people. On a quiet small street corner, there was a
little store owned by Harvey Goldstein. Mr. Goldstein was a comfortable merchandiser.
He traded in all kinds of imports, and was by and large a moral adult male. He did non
purchase goods from sweatshops nor did he of all time cheat a client. At 1:31 P.M. on
May 15, 1996, he stepped out of his store on the Upper East Side of Manhattan to
run into a adult male who dealt in Asiatic silk screens business district. He had been listening to
traffic wireless AM 530 and, make up one’s minding that traffic was excessively heavy, planned to take
the metro. Goldstein was a smart adult male, really smart, who had built his shop and
his luck out of blood, labor, cryings, and perspiration. Goldstein was besides an
solid member of the Jewish community whom everybody loved, but he ne’er did
anything excess, out of the ordinary, for anyone but himself.
On the other side of town there was a new reaching to the metropolis. This
adult male & # 8217 ; s name was Runing Bear. He was an American Indian who had gone to New York
to seek his luck ; nevertheless, he shortly fell upon difficult times. He had lived a life
of pecuniary want on the fields of Colorado, and had proceeded to New York
by Amtrak with merely a dollar and a dream. Thingss did non travel as planned, though ;
he could non happen a occupation and had taken to panhandling and kiping in the streets.
His dreams, no uncertainty influenced by the exhausts coming up from the cloaca, were of
money. A good adult male who merely wanted to work and do a nice life, he had gone
to the public assistance office a few blocks north of Goldstein & # 8217 ; s store. He was sent to
the employment office business district, and decided to take the metro. No uncertainty, the
public assistance functionaries and societal workers sent him off with a sad shrug and a suspiration.
They knew he was a simple adult male.
The two work forces saw each other waiting for the same train business district.
Interestingly plenty, they were the lone two waiting for the metro auto, as a
terrorist group had threatened to bomb a train and New Yorkers had by and large
taken the menace earnestly. They looked at each other briefly, sized one
another up, and got on the train. While on the train, Runing Bear began
shirking with a tomahawk ; fliping it up in the air over and over once more in
ennui. Mr. Goldstein was gazing at a one-fourth traveling about on the land
debating whether or non he should pick it up. Merely as Mr. Goldstein reached
down to pick up the one-fourth, Runing Bear dropped his hatched on the land.
Both of them took at a glimpse at the other ; merely so an detonation rocked the
paths. The Muslim activists had non been bluffing this clip. Each adult male died
without cognizing precisely what had happened to him and both of the work forces & # 8217 ; s ideas
had been of money. Goldstein was believing about refinancing his mortgage and
taking a loan out on the equity in his auto in order to buy new stock list
and do a solid net income. Runing Bear had been believing of how nice it would be
to happen a suitcase full of hundred-dollar measures.
The work forces both arrived at the Gatess of Eden. St. Peter, following his
higher-ups & # 8217 ; orders, knew that he needed these work forces to make full the quotas for the new
affirmative-action program put into topographic point ; what better than a Native American and a
Jew to put into musca volitanss that would hold antecedently been occupied by merely
Chri
stians. St. Peter knew that these work forces weren’t really qualified for
entryway into Eden, but he devised a program to assist.
& # 8220 ; Runing Bear & # 8221 ; he said, & # 8220 ; you were a hard-working cat, and you ne’er did
anything incorrect. However, you ne’er did anything right either. I think, nevertheless,
that this mistake was due to the fact that you had no money. Therefore, I am
traveling to direct you back to Earth to populate for five old ages. There, you will hold a
opportunity to demo me how you would move without worrying about material corruptness.
See, I & # 8217 ; m allowing you one wish before you return, and I am certain you will utilize
this wish to rectify your former problems. & # 8221 ;
& # 8220 ; I wish for a million dollars. & # 8221 ; said Running Bear without thought.
& # 8220 ; So be it. & # 8221 ; said St. Peter, and Runing Bear returned to Earth with his
bag of hard currency. Following, he pulled Goldstein & # 8217 ; s file.
& # 8220 ; Well, Mr. Goldstein, & # 8221 ; he said, & # 8220 ; you were surely a moral adult male.
However, you ne’er did anything out of the ordinary. You were ever
straightforward, but you ne’er gave anything back. You ne’er saved anybody & # 8217 ; s
life or did community service. Therefore, I am traveling to direct you back to Earth
for five old ages to try to rectify these fortunes. You, of class, have
one want as well. & # 8221 ;
Goldstein thought for a piece. Runing Bear had gotten the money the
easy manner and had abandoned any sense of work ethic. Goldstein thought that he
would learn him a lesson and assist out the community at the same clip. Therefore he
would derive his redemption. & # 8220 ; Give me the cognition to gain a million dollars. & # 8221 ;
With this wish Goldstein could gain a million dollars a million times over
alternatively of merely holding a set sum.
& # 8220 ; A really wise want, & # 8221 ; exclaimed St. Peter, and he granted the want.
Goldstein so proceeded back to Earth. There he decided to learn
running bear his lesson. Mr. Goldstein used his cognition on Runing Bear ; he
got him highly rummy and was able to victimize away the Native American & # 8217 ; s money.
The following forenoon Runing Bear Realized what had happened and went to repossess
his money.
& # 8220 ; You will stop up in snake pit for this, & # 8221 ; Said Running Bear. & # 8220 ; And I will no
longer be accepted because I will hold to travel work or implore once more and will non hold
clip to serve. & # 8221 ;
Goldstein smiled. & # 8220 ; You should hold been more wise in your determination.
All is non lost. You, see, I & # 8217 ; m non pocketing your money. I & # 8217 ; m traveling to put
it in a societal service centre on the Upper East side to assist people develop and
happen employment. & # 8221 ;
& # 8220 ; You & # 8217 ; ll still travel to hell for projecting me out on the street. & # 8221 ; said the
Indian.
& # 8220 ; Not so fast, & # 8221 ; Goldstein said. & # 8220 ; I have programs for you. You say you need
a small money, and wear & # 8217 ; t mind working, yes? But at the same clip you need to
execute some good workss to accomplish redemption. Here & # 8217 ; s what I & # 8217 ; ll do. You & # 8217 ; ll be
the caput societal worker at the new establishment. That manner, you & # 8217 ; ll acquire a little
wage and a large opportunity to assist people with whom you & # 8217 ; ve shared a common predicament.
Both of our jobs will be solved. I & # 8217 ; m sorry I didn & # 8217 ; t inquire you for the money,
but you wouldn & # 8217 ; Ts have given it to me ; alternatively you would hold allow person else
cheat you and you would hold gone to hell. So I decided to utilize the most
powerful arm in the world. & # 8221 ;
& # 8220 ; You are really wise, sir, & # 8221 ; said Running Bear & # 8220 ; but what is the most
powerful arm in the universe? Knifes? Guns? & # 8221 ;
& # 8220 ; No. Intelligence. & # 8221 ;
Intelligence can be the most powerful and benevolent force in the universe when
used right.
