The Navajo & # 8211 ; A Native American Tribe

The Navajo folk was one of the most celebrated and interesting folks in American

history. It of import that people know our native American background and who

welcomed us into the new universe

It is believed that Ancestors of the Navajos traveled from the northwest Pacific

Coast and western Canada to the southwesterly United States between 1300 and 1600.

Much of the district was occupied by the Ute and Pueblo folks who subsequently became Navajo

enemies. The Navajos were huntsmans and gathers of wild workss, roots, berries, and nuts.

Their linguistic communication is Athapaskan which is spoken by native people in western Canada.

The Navajos call themselves Dineh, & # 8220 ; the people & # 8221 ; and they call their original

fatherland in the Southwest Dinetah. Dinetah was located in northwesterly New Mexico

and northeasterly Arizona, South of the San Juan River. The Dineh broke up into little

sets in order to happen land to populate on. Navajo means & # 8220 ; planted Fieldss in a vale & # 8221 ; which was

given to them by the Spanish in the 17th century. The Navajos met other Native

American people populating nearby who taught them how to farm and turn harvests such as

maize, beans, and squash. The Navajos lived peacefully with most of their neighbours and

traded with the Puebloans, giving them cervid meat, deerskins, and salt, in return for

cotton fabric.

The Navajo Nation contains about 15 million estates of beautiful land located in

New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. The land is high above sea degree and rainfall

is low, with norms of 5 to 11 inches per twelvemonth. The land is dry and merely a few rivers run

through the Nation. Navajos depend on little watercourses and springs for their H2O

supply.

The traditional Navajos lived in little colonies dwelling of a group of households

related on the female parent & # 8217 ; s side. The house, called a Hogan, was built with six or eight sides,

had a rounded roof, and was made from logs, coppice, and clay. Each colony besides had

land that was used for farming and croping animate beings. The land was controlled for usage by

the group as a whole and the eldest adult female was the caput of the group. She managed the

group & # 8217 ; s personal businesss because of her wisdom and experience. Family relationships were

strong, particularly between a female parent and her kids.

All people populating in a colony shared the work Women did the cookery,

cleansing, weaving of blan

kets and carpets, and kid attention. Work force cleared the land for agriculture,

built the Hogans, and hunted animate beings. Men, adult females, and kids took attention of their herds

of animate beings which consisted chiefly of sheep, cowss, and Equus caballuss. The sheep was used for

their meat and wool, Equus caballuss were used for transit, and cowss, carpets, and covers

were sold for hard currency.

The Navajos taught their kids that all living things had a right to populate, to eat,

and to move for themselves. Children had single rights that were non violated by grownups.

No 1 had the right to command anyone else, to coerce person to make something, or to

speak for another individual. When a kid was four to six old ages old, they were given a

lamb to care for, and they were no longer considered a kid.

The Navajos faith contains beliefs about the beginning of the universe and about the

natural and supernatural existences that exist in the universe. They believed that most

diseases had a religious cause, so ceremonials of vocal and supplication would be held to honour

the liquors and to protect them from immorality. The vocalist would make a sandpainting or

sacred image, made from wood coal, maize pollen or crushed sandstone.

Spanish soldiers started to assail Navajo colonies in the late 1500 & # 8217 ; s and

continued until the 1800 & # 8217 ; s. In 1848, contending broke out once more when the American white

adult male came to look for Ag and gold in Santa Fe and New Mexico. In 1863, Kit Carson

followed orders to kill the Navajo warriors and to capture the adult females and kids. His

military personnels besides burned the Fieldss and Hogans, and killed 1000s of sheep. During the winter,

the Navajos had no places or nutrient, and 8,000 surrendered at Fort Defiance. The Navaho

were so forced to walk 300 stat mis to Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Many died of

hungriness because the dirt was hapless and they couldn & # 8217 ; t farm on the reserve. Soon

after, a smallpox epidemic killed more than 2,000 in a few months. In June 1868, the

Navajos were permitted to return to their former fatherland which was turned into a

reserve.

Today, the Navajo Nation is home to about 160,000 people. In 1969,

The Navajo Community College opened in Tsaile, Arizona. Some are still husbandmans,

but most Navajos are developing new beginnings of income. The Navajos have successfully
