In the novel The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Mordecai Richler punishes
Duddy for his wrongs against others in several ways. Each penalty fits the
offense, and there is an sarcasm about each one. The three penalties inflicted on
Duddy at the terminal of the novel are the loss of Simcha & # 8217 ; s love, the loss of his
friends, and the absence of any financess to construct on his belongings.
The loss of Simcha & # 8217 ; s love is a annihilating blow for Duddy. This is apparent
when Duddy confronts Yvette and asks her, ? Why did you travel to my gramps? Of
all the people in the universe, he & # 8217 ; s the lone one? ( Richler, 1959, 313 ) . Duddy did
everything he could to acquire this land because his gramps said that & # 8216 ; A adult male
without land is nobody & # 8217 ; . Duddy, in his ain head, did it all for Simcha, to gain
his love and regard and in the terminal, he had neither. The loss of Simcha & # 8217 ; s love
did non go on for nil. It happened because of the manner in which Duddy had
gone about geting his land. Yvette told Simcha, and Simcha did non O.K. .
He was, in fact, highly defeated with Duddy. His letdown is shown
when he tells Duddy,

Virgil & # 8217 ; s friendly relationships besides punishes Duddy. They are the lone two people in the

return. In the loss of their friendly relationships, Duddy is being punished for his
icky intervention of other people, even his lone friends. Duddy may non even
