“The Sentry is a really graphic verse form written by Wilfred Owen which describes the awful conditions he remembers during life in the trenches of World War One. We learn how the trenches sounded and smelt like. and besides how the effects of war live with you everlastingly. The verse form touched me because I had ne’er realised merely how much hurting and enduring the soldiers had to travel through. but this poem brings it to your attending.
The poet catch your attending by vividly depicting the milieus both in and outside the trenches. “Rain. guttering down in waterfalls of slime” is an effectual metaphor which vividly describes what the trenches looked like. and merely how wet they were. The word ‘waterfalls’ suggests an copiousness of H2O. which is invariably fluxing and ceaseless. It gives us the thought that they have no control over the H2O. as a waterfall is near adequate unstoppable. Besides. because the word is plural. we can so conceive of the measure of H2O. There was so much H2O that the clay turned to ‘slime’ . so we can conceive of merely how soiled the trenches are. with a thick sludge everlastingly fluxing around them.
