Sarcasm in the Cask of Amontillado

Throughout the semester, we read many short narratives, and all of them had some dramatic

turn to them. In some of them, there was sarcasm and which means & # 8220 ; An incongruousness

between what is expected to go on and what really occurs. & # 8221 ; I chose to compose about The

Cask of Amontillado, by Edgar Allen Poe.

In the narrative The Cask of Amontillado, Poe uses a batch of sarcasm with his characters right from the beginning of the narrative. One of his chief characters is named fortunato, but in the terminal, he is the least fortunate individual in the narrative, because he is killed by Montresor. Poe besides uses a batch of sarcasm in his authorship when the characters are talking. For illustration, the chief character, Montresor, foremost tells Fortunato that he does non desire him to come down to savor the Amontillado. Montresor says that it is cold and moistness in the catacombs, and he does non desire Fortunato to acquire ill. All through their decension into the catacombs, Montresor is showing his concerns about Fortunato & # 8217 ; s life. However In the dorsum of his head, Montresor, knows that he is taking fortunato down into the catacombs with the exclusive purpose of killing him. By his actions and his words, the reader can non even conceive of what Montresor plans to make,

because the manner he leads him down the catacombs is by stating, we should turn back, you are ill, I will acquire Luchesi to savor the Amontillado, but Montressor knows that Fortunato will non halt because he is. Montressor knows that Fortunato is really chesty, and even says that Luchesi may be merely good as a wine cognoscente as him. Montressor knows that this will acquire Fortunato into the catacombs, because he thinks he is the best, that is merely his nature.

& gt ;

What is dry about the whole conversation down through the catacombs is that Montresor seems to be worried about Fortunato & # 8217 ; s wellness, but he is taking fortunato to kill him. It is besides really dry that Montresor tells all of his retainers to remain at place? Nothing. On the dark of the large festival, and the dark of this horrific offense, but he tells his retainers he is non traveling to be at that place, he tells them he will be out all dark. So what could do these retainers stay on the biggest festival dark of the twelvemonth, when there maestro is non even place? , nil. Montressor knows that if any inquiries should originate about the dissapearance of Fortunato, all of the retainers would state nil unusual happened that dark in the house, even if they were non at that place, for fright of acquiring in problem with Montressor.

It is besides dry that when they are in the catacombs and Fortunato asks Montresor if he is a member of the Masons, Montresor says yes, when Fortunato asks for a mark, Montresor pulls out a trowel from behind his dorsum. The Masons is a brotherhood, a nine for work forces, but has nil to make with masonry, besides known as bricklaying, or edifice things. This is dry because Fortunato does non intend a Mason in that sense, he means a member of the brotherhoods of the Masons, but when he pulls out the trowel from his cloak Fortunato does non believe this is unusual. In the terminal, all of these dry state of affairss, it leads up to one thing, a perfect slaying.

So in decision this narrative is filled with dry state of affairss, it may be every bit simple as Fortunato & # 8217 ; s name, or a complex as Montresor & # 8217 ; s program to acquire rid of Fortunato. That is what makes this whole narrative ironic. The reader ne’er sees it coming, and neither did Fortunato. From the manner Montresor was moving, the reader might hold gotten the feeling that they were friends, and ne’er expected that Montressor was traveling to kill Fortunato.
