In Arthur Miller? s The Crucible, there is one character who, because of her
selfish and evil ways, causes the devastation of many people in the town of
Salem. This character is Abigail Williams. In the drama, green-eyed monster, and self-
involvement are the two features that are seen invariably throughout the
drama. These features pertain peculiarly to Abigail, and give a in writing
description of her life, and how she deals with things in it. Throughout the
drama she gets worse and worse each clip something major happens.
After her matter and failure with juju, she was overcome by love
and green-eyed monster, and she was willing to make anything to acquire John back to her ain
ego. Since she was overcome, she had no concern with ethical motives, and starts to
wickedness to a great extent by get downing the enchantress tests, which causes the deceases of many
people in the town. Abigail doesn? T want anyone to happen out that she was in
the wood so she harshly threatens Betty Paris and Mary Warren non to state
anything. ? Let either of you breathe a word, or the border of a word, about the
other things, and I will come to you in the black of some awful dark and I
will convey a pointy thinking that will shiver you & # 8230 ; And you know I can make
it & # 8230 ; I can do you wish you had ne’er seen the Sun go down. ?
She fell in love with John Proctor after their matter, her ethical motives and her
whole life began to fall apart. She started to be overcome with her feelings of
love, and her passion for John was tremendous. After she was denied these
things she could no longer command herself, and her whole ground for life
became to acquire back John. This shows that when a individual is given something,
which they enjoy, and even love, and they are denied it, they feel overwrought
and they will many times do about anything to acquire it back.
She was really despairing and she felt willing to make anything to acquire back
John for herself. She had been brought up to believe that thaumaturgy worked, so
she turned to Tituba and her juju. Abigail begged her for her aid in that
affair, This is shown when Tituba says, ? You beg me to raise! She beg
me to do charm- ? Abigail was so despairing to acquire back John that she even
drank poulet? s blood to acquire him back. She drank this blood appeal so
Elizabeth would decease. Abigail? s patterned advance of evilness and her looking for
aid from witchery shows that love and green-eyed monster in big measures can
cause a individual to travel to what they hate most for aid. Abigail goes from her
goodness with internal convulsion, to what she was brought up in Salem to fear,
and despise: witchery.
Af
ter some thought Abigail realizes that she can utilize witchery to acquire
back John, though non in the manner that she had thought earlier. She believes
that the lone ground that John is non giving in to her is because of Elizabeth.
She realizes that the people of the town are so afraid of the Satan, she can utilize
that fear to discredit, and finally acquire rid of Elizabeth, thereby acquiring
John for herself. She besides realizes that if she right off accuses Elizabeth,
the people would non believe her because Elizabeth is excessively pious. She decides
that if she starts with evil people, and works her manner up to the more pious
1s to, eventually, Elizabeth she will be believed. This concatenation of concluding
causes the deceases of many of the townsfolk in Salem. Many people in the
town of Salem think Abigail? s making the right thing by impeaching all these
people. They don? T know of Abigail? s strategy and encourages that these
enchantresss be given their due penalty. Reverend Hale has a struggle with
Abigail? s behaviors but non for the same ground as John Proctor. Hale knows
that Abigail is purging and he truly tries to forestall guiltless lives being
wasted. John wants to halt Abigail so he can salvage his married woman. Hale wants to
salvage guiltless lives from being unreasonably killed. Hale is a great adult male who
attempts to salvage lives but John was the opposite and is selfish by merely caring
about his married woman? s life. At the terminal of the drama, nevertheless, John realizes his
selfishness and dies while salvaging his honestness.
Abigail? s actions show that one time a individual begins to make evil things, and
wickednesss, it becomes about 2nd nature, and they don? Ts truly mind it so
much. In clip they even wear? T attention at all, and they may even go on to make
wickednesss merely for the merriment of it. This is shown when Abigail continues to transgress, and
continues the enchantress tests even after she realizes that the program she hatched to
kill Elizabeth didn? t work, and she had non planned to hold her love, John,
killed.
From Abigail? s actions we learn that a individual shouldn? t base their
whole life on one love or a feeling of green-eyed monster. If they do they can alter
their whole life for the far worse. For illustration, Abigail started to go a
complete scoundrel and the whole class of everyone? s life in Salem was
changed for the worse or terminated all together because of her selfishness.
We should all larn to non hook onto any one person because there are
many other fish in the sea. Besides the fact that it can destroy your life on a
personal degree it can destroy many of the people that you deal with on a
mundane footing.
