Pseudoscience vs Science Essay Sample
In chapter three of “Nonsense on Piles: How to State Science from Bunk. ” Pigliucci shows illustrations of pseudoscience and how it differs from scientific discipline. Throughout the reading. my construct of pseudoscience and scientific discipline would hold to be that pseudoscience is something that is non based off nor have any scientific background or findings. It is something that people believe will work. but has no true scientific backup and it is non supported by industries or the Government. While on the other manus. scientific discipline is based on scientific findings where you have a theory and run experiments and organize hypothesis and come up with a solution that is shown and proven to work.
One good illustration of pseudoscience vs. scientific discipline is AIDS. Scientists have tried many different remedies for AIDS but the virus evolves excessively fast for any medicine to bring around it. So where pseudoscience comes in. is when people come up with redresss that they believe and other people believe will bring around the virus. Gambia a topographic point in Africa. President Yahya Jammeh found a remedy for AIDS that consist of “a rub down with a pick. a splash on the face with another potion and a drink of a murky looking liquid” ( Pigliucci. Massimo. pg. 58. ) . There is besides a Church in Ethiopia that believed the remedy was holy H2O. and they treated the people by “hurling H2O [ … ] while at the same clip crushing them with wooden crosses. for good measure” ( Pigliucci. Massimo. pg. 58 ) .
The above illustration of pseudoscience that Pigliucci shows is a good illustration and I would hold to hold with it. The two remedies I mentioned that the President came up with and the Church are perfect mentions that demonstrate that there was no scientific discipline involved in the determination of the remedies. but based strictly on what they believed would work.
