Review of The American Dream

I think Michael Moore & # 8217 ; s documental Roger and Me can be compared to Elizabeth Stuart Phelps & # 8217 ; & # 8220 ; The Silent Partner. & # 8221 ; Perley, the fianc & # 233 ; of the proprietor of the Millss visited a twosome of hapless households. The hapless people in who visited, fundamentally were in the same state of affairs as the hapless people in Flint, Michigan in Roger and Me. Maverick, the proprietor of the Millss and can be compared to Roger Smith, because neither of them chose to listen to ground.

Sip Garth & # 8217 ; s place was non a enjoyable topographic point to populate. It was described as & # 8220 ; a moist house and she rents the dampest room in it ; a tenement self-praise of the breadth of the house, and a cupboard sleeping room with a small closet window in it ; a low room with cellar odors and river odors about it, and with trough odors and drain odors and with unclassified odors of old ages settled and settling in its walls and ceiling. & # 8221 ; ( Phelps, 534 ) Sip is hapless ; this place was all she could afford. She had to work and take attention of her deaf sister Catty. Perley experienced first manus the conditions in which Sip lived. She besides visited the place of Bub Mell. Perley noticed that like Sip Garth & # 8217 ; s place, Bub Mell & # 8217 ; s place had a strong and unpleasant olfactory property. There were holes in the stairss and the walls were crumpling. There were six kids, Bub & # 8217 ; s vomit female parent and his male parent life in the house. The male parent did non work and fundamentally depended on his kids to work and back up the household. Bub worked at age eight even though he was excessively immature. These can be compared to the conditions presented in Roger and Me. The adult female who slaughtered coneies was really hapless and lived in a creaky place. All she knew was that she could engender coneies to sell for meat. In the movie, we besides saw the vacant places. With that came a major rat infestation. The effects of the poorness in Flint was lay waste toing. For case, the crazed adult male who was doing a disturbance in the street degree Celsius

learly illustrated what poorness did to him. It drove him brainsick. Another illustration was when “Nightline” came to Flint to make a unrecorded broadcast, their satellite new wave was stolen. Finally, the adult male from the sheriff’s section who had to evict people due to them non paying rent on clip, illustrated the conditions and the difficult times people faced in Flint. Most people who did non pay their rent did non mean to be negligent in their precedences, but the economic state of affairs or deficiency at that place of in Flint caused them non to pay rent.

Perley & # 8217 ; s fianc & # 233 ; Maverick is similar in character to Roger Smith. Both of them were self- absorbed and refused to listen to ground. Perley told Maverick of the conditions that she saw at the two places she visited and she suggested ways of bettering the conditions and that she become a soundless spouse. Maverick arrogantly refused to listen to her and brushed her off. Mentioning to the mill workers, Maverick said, & # 8220 ; Who doesn & # 8217 ; t care a fig about them, you are right, who doesn & # 8217 ; t care a fig about them-to settle. & # 8221 ; ( Phelps, 551 ) This showed Maverick & # 8217 ; s disinterest about what Perley is seeking to state him. In Roger and Me, Roger Smith was similar to Maverick. Michael Moore tried diligently to convert Roger Smith to come to Flint to see the after- effects of the mill shuttings. He even went so far as to present as a stock holder in order to see Roger Smith, but Smith refused to speak with him. When he eventually got to speak to him face-to-face, Roger Smith decided that he did non desire to travel to Flint and refused to listen to Moore.

Although here was a one hundred twelvemonth spread between & # 8220 ; The Silent Partner & # 8221 ; and Roger and Me, there were some points of comparing and a point of contrast. The conditions in both plants, were comparable because they showed the effects of poorness. Maverick and Roger Smith were similar in their self-involved personalities. We saw from Roger and Me and & # 8220 ; The Silent Partner & # 8221 ; the desolation that poorness illustrated.
