War Poetry

A popular subject for poets in the last century was war. Many celebrated verse forms were written about the two universe wars, every bit good as the Korean and Vietnam wars.

For my study I have chosen six verse forms, three by Wilfred Owen and three by Australian poets. Anthem for Doomed Youth, The Send Off and Insensibility ( 1 ) were written by Owen during the first universe war to show his anti-war attitude. Beach Burial by Kenneth Slessor, Homecoming by Bruce Dawe and Letter XV by Bruce Beaver are celebrated Australian verse forms about war.

The verse forms have many similarities, particularly in content, but besides have their differences.

The capable affair of the verse form is evidently by and large the same. Most are about soldiers dying/dead because of a war. Beach Burial is specifically about the WW2 conflict at El Alamein, and Homecoming is concerned with the consequence of the Vietnam War, but the remainder are about war in general. The intent of the verse form is to convey the poets ain beliefs against war, for illustration Wilfred Owen was an devouring anti-war militant, despite & # 8211 ; or possibly because of & # 8211 ; the fact that he fought in WW1.

The emotion portrayed is largely depressive, drab and acrimonious. Anthem for Doomed Youth seems somewhat accusative ; this is because the poet asks inquiries of the reader, about make bolding the reader to differ. Letter XV emits a baffled temper, as if the poet doesn T understand why war exists.

All the verse forms could likely be described as laments, sing they are all plaints for the dead.

Anthem for Doomed Youth is about a Shakespearian sonnet, but the rhyming is incorrect, so technically it is a Petrarchan sonnet ( divided into an octave and six ) .

The other verse forms are either separated into regular stanzas like Beach Burial & # 8211 ; or have no existent construction, such as Homecoming.

There is plentifulness of imagination in most of the verse forms. The Send Off used the oxymoron faces grimly gay to depict the work forces, bespeaking that they seem happy but they shouldn T, since they are traveling to war. The poet besides describes the work forces as dead while they are alive, because he is so certain of their destiny. Imagery is used in Homecoming to depict the different types of work forces & # 8211 ; Clematis ochreleucas, kinky-hairs, crew-cuts & # 8211 ; and their places & # 8211 ; pathetic curvatures of Earth the knuckled hills & # 8211 ; this paints a graphic image in the reader s head. In & # 8216 ; Beach Burial dead organic structures are given properties of unrecorded work forces, such as they sway and wander. Equally good as this, the phrase words choking coil is used to depict the deficiency of names for the dead soldiers. Personification is besides used in Anthem for Doomed Youth, where guns are angry and the sound of shells is described as shrill, demented choirs.

& gt ; Alleys cobbled with their brothers is used in Insensibility to depict a trench with dead organic structures strewn about ; this is an unpleasant image, used deliberately to upset the reader.

These techniques are used to give life to the verse forms, to portray the ideas of the poet and to do the verse forms interesting.

Sound and Rhythm are of import in a verse form to do it audibly aesthetic and to do it flux. Two of the verse forms have no rime ( clean poetry ) Letter XV is disconnected and disconnected but Homecoming uses repeat of conveying them place to assist flux, and an amphora of they re.

The Send Off has four stanzas of five lines each with a rhyming construction of a, B, a, a, B for each stanza. Anthem for Doomed Youth has the structure- a, B, a, B, degree Celsius, vitamin D, degree Celsius, vitamin D, vitamin E, degree Fahrenheit, degree Fahrenheit, vitamin E, g, g. This, as I mentioned, is about a Shakespearian sonnet ( a, B, a, B, degree Celsius, vitamin D, degree Celsius, vitamin D, vitamin E, degree Fahrenheit, vitamin E, degree Fahrenheit, g, g ) . These rimes improve the sound and beat of the verse form. Insensibility and Beach Burial each contain a slant rime. Insensibility uses consonant rhyme, with riming pairs i.e. Killed/cold, brothers/withers. The 2nd and 4th lines of Beach Burial have a slant rime, i.e. come/foam, men/begin, while the 3rd line has an internal rime, such as wander/ under in

At dark they sway and wander in the Waterss far under

Although Insensibility and Beach Burial Don T have true rime ; the sham rime still creates beat.

The two chief constituents of a verse form are the content, intending the topic and emotion, and the technique which is things like construction, beat and imagination.

The six war verse forms I chose have a really similar content because the subject is common to all of them. Large differences come in the technique, because this defines the manner a verse form is written, non what it is approximately.

Owen s verse forms, Anthem for Doomed Youth The Send Off and Insensibility ( 1 ) were all structured verse forms with at least partial rime, and had similarities because of the poet s technique.

The three Australian verse forms, Beach Burial by Kenneth Slessor, Bruce Dawe s Homecoming and Letter XV by Bruce Beaver differ greatly, from the regular rhyming Beach Burial to the staccato, unstructured Letter Fifteen

The technique portion of the verse form, as it can be seen with these illustrations, is wholly detached from the content, and varies between poets, instead than subjects.

I prefer the beat and consistence of Owen s verse forms and Beach Burial to the manner of Homecoming or Letter XV. I like the rimes, as they tend to convey the verse form together, they unify it. Obviously I agree with the message in all these verse forms, or I wouldn Ts have chosen the subject of war / anti-war poesy. All of the verse forms depressed me ( apart from Letter XV, which confused me ) so the poets must hold done a good occupation at portraying emotions.
