The autographed first stanza of “Mi ultimo adios”
“Mi ultimo adios” ( Spanish for “My Last Farewell” ) is a poem written by Philippine national hero Dr Jose Rizal on the Eve of his executing on 30 December 1896. This verse form was one of the last notes he wrote before his decease ; another that he had written was found in his shoe but because the text was illegible. its contents remains a enigma.
Rizal did non impute a rubric to his verse form. Mariano Ponce. his friend and fellow reformer. titled it Mi Ultimo Pensamiento ( My Last Thought ) in the transcripts he distributed. but this did non catch on.
“On the afternoon of Dec. 29. 1896. a twenty-four hours before his executing. Dr. Jose Rizal was visited by his female parent. Teodora Alonzo. sisters Lucia. Josefa. Trinidad. Maria and Narcisa. and two nephews. When they took their leave. Rizal told Trinidad in English that there was something in the little intoxicant range ( cocinilla ) . non alcohol lamp ( lamparilla ) . The range was given to Narcisa by the guard when the party was about to board their passenger car in the courtyard. At place. the Rizal ladies recovered from the range a folded paper. On it was written an unsigned. ignoble and dateless verse form of 14 five-line stanzas. The Rizals reproduced transcripts of the verse form and sent them to Rizal’s friends in the state and abroad. In 1897. Mariano Ponce in Hong Kong had the verse form printed with the rubric “Mi Ultimo Pensamiento. ” Fr. Mariano Dacanay. who received a transcript of the verse form while a captive in Bilibid ( gaol ) . published it in the first issue of La Independencia on Sept. 25. 1898 with the rubric “Ultimo Adios” . ” [ 1 ]
The range was non delivered until after the executing as Rizal needed it to illume the room.
Political impact
After it was annexed by the United States as a consequence of the Spanish-American War. the Philippines was perceived as a community of “barbarians” incapable of self-government. U. S. Representative Henry A. Cooper buttonholing for direction of Philippine personal businesss. recited the verse form before the American House of Representatives. Gaining the aristocracy of the piece’s writer. his fellow congresswomans enacted the Philippine Bill of 1902 enabling self-determination ( subsequently known as the Philippine Organic Act of 1902 ) . despite the fact that the United States at that clip still had the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act in consequence and African Americans has yet to be granted equal rights as US Citizens. [ 2 ] It created the Philippine Assembly. appointed two Filipino delegates to the American Congress. extended the US Bill of Rights to Filipinos. and laid the foundation for an independent authorities. The verse form was translated into Bahasa Indonesia by Rosihan Anwar and was recited by Indonesian soldiers before traveling into conflict during the Indonesian National Revolution. [ 3 ]
Rosihan Anwar recalled the fortunes of the interlingual rendition:
“The state of affairs was favourable to advance patriotism. [ On 7 September 1944. Prime Minister Koiso of Japan declared that the ‘East Indies’ would go independent shortly. an proclamation that was received enthusiastically throughout the islands. and got enraptured intervention in Asia Raja the undermentioned day. ] In that context. I thought it would be good that I could circulate this narrative about Jose Rizal among our younger people at that clip. It was rather natural ; I thought it would be good to state the narrative of Jose Rizal. this Rebel against the Spanish. And of class the flood tide. when he was already sentenced to decease and so hauled off to confront firing squad. and he wrote that [ poem ] … . ”
“I translated it from the English. Because I do non cognize Spanish. I know Gallic. I know German. but non Spanish. He read Mi ultimo adios over wireless in Jakarta on Saturday. 30 December 1944. Rizal’s 48th decease day of remembrance. The same twenty-four hours. the paper Asia Raja devoted about half of its back page to a characteristic and verse form on Rizal written by Anwar. accompanied by Anwar’s interlingual rendition.

If over my tomb some twenty-four hours. 1000 wouldst see blow.
A simple low flow’r amidst midst grasses.
Bringing it up to thy lips and snog my psyche so.
And under the cold grave. I may experience on my forehead.
Warmth of thy breath. a puff of thy tenderness.
Let the Moon with soft. soft light me descry.
Let the morning direct Forth its fleeting. superb visible radiation.
In mutters grave allow the air current to suspire.
And should a bird descend on my cross and alight.

And on quiet afternoons when one prays for me on high.
Pray excessively. oh. my Motherland. that in God may rest I.
Pray. thee. for all the hapless who have died.
For all those who unequalled tortures have undergone ;
For our hapless female parents who in resentment have cried ;
For orphans. widows and prisoners to anguishs were shied.
And pray excessively that 1000 may seest thine ain salvation.
And when the dark dark wraps the cemet’ry
And merely the dead to vigil there are left entirely.
Disturb non their rest. disturb non the enigma:
If thou hear the sounds of cittern or psaltery.
It is I. beloved Country. who. a vocal t’thee intone.
And when my grave by all is no more remembered.
With neither cross nor rock to tag its topographic point.
Let it be ploughed by adult male. with spade Lashkar-e-Taiba it be scattered
And my ashes ere to void are restored.
Let them turn to dust to cover thy earthly infinite.

Farewell. parents. brothers. beloved by me.

Translations
Mi ultimo adios could be the most translated loyal swan vocal in the universe. and readings into 46 Filipino linguistic communications including Filipino Sign Language [ 1 ] . and as of 2005 at least 35 English interlingual renditions known and published ( in print ) . The most popular English loop is the 1911 interlingual rendition of Charles Derbyshire and is inscribed on bronze. Besides on bronze at the Rizal Park in Manila. but less known. is the 1944 one of novelist Nick Joaquin. The latest interlingual rendition is in Czech made by a Czech diplomat and addressed at the session of their Senate.
