Fear. It oozes from the Black Marias of every character in Ayn Rand? s Anthem. It is a

fright comparative to that of the 1000s of slaves kept by a individual maestro, or the 1000000s

in concentration cantonments that were maintained by a measly hundred or thousand. It is the

the fright to arise against an already recognized destiny. Once this fright is instilled, it condemns

coevals after coevals, and unless it is stopped it will be accepted as the lone manner to

unrecorded. Fortunately, there are exclusions. Lights at the terminal of the everlastingly dark tunnels. Great

minds that, under the right fortunes, could spread out and make highs like the great

heads we know today ; Albert Einstein, Plato, Malcolm X, Mahatma Ghandi. While

reading about Equality in Anthem, many inquiries are repeatedly presented. How does the

leftist society maintain control over its topics? Where does Equality? s thrust to liberate

himself from Bolshevism come from? What makes it so easy for him to make so?

The entreaty in a leftist society lies in its apparently harmless outer beauty.

Ideas like holding regard for fellow worlds are intensified, therefore making mass entreaty.

Once this entreaty is instilled it deteriorates, a society is left dragging its weak and smothering

its strong. The strong or intelligent are shunned, and forced to degrade themselves in

order to suit in with their brothers. It is clear that the society is maintained by fright and

ignorance. The people in the novel know no other manner of life. The being of single

ideas and thoughts has disappeared from their society. These mindless living deads are merely

certain that it is evil to believe or be entirely. Even Equality, the most alone person in the

dark times, believes it is a wickedness to be entirely until the really terminal of the novel. Ignorance and

fright shut down the heads of the persons in the book and enables them to merely believe

collec

tively, but few still see the importance of individualism.

The conflict Equality faces is fundamentally an internal 1. Each new find or

realisation that comes to him convey on a new struggle. Thingss that were viewed as immorality all

of his life all of a sudden seem pure and Equality is forced to reinvent his full manner of thought.

He must suppress the fright and ignorance that engulfs his brothers. Yet, deep within his

psyche, his full life has been a changeless hunt, taking to individualism. Equality ever

knew there was something more meaningful for him entirely. It seems that throughout the

full book the word? I? is on the tip of his lingua. Slowly, but certainly, each leftist

thought is overcome, go forthing one adult male, one psyche, and one thought.

Victory was simple yet sweet for Equality. Once off from the remainder of society, he

was able to truly discover solidarity. He saw his face. He felt love for merely one other

single, he made his ain determinations for his ain good being. The find of the word

? I? in the books he read was so monumental to the secret plan in the novel, but the feeling

the word induced already existed. He reeked the benefits of being entirely, holding his ain

place, and person to love, and his ain ownerships. Once he experienced these things,

the leftist values that were instilled in him no longer existed. He had his ain self-importance,

which can be smothered and denied, but ne’er expelled from world.

In the preface to Anthem, Ayn Rand writes, ? The greatest guilt today is that of

the people who accept Bolshevism by moral default ; the people who seek protection from

the necessity of taking a base, by declining to acknowledge to themselves the nature of that which

they are accepting & # 8230 ; ? She goes on to give us a novel that embodies these ideas.

Populating in a universe like that of Anthem? s would be acrimonious and cold, without individualism or

creativeness. The last resort? Ayn Rand, and others who would be strong plenty to be

heroes, merely like Equality 7-2521. They are the visible radiations at the terminals of the everlastingly dark

tunnels. They are hope.
